Live weather updates from Chennai for today, December 8: According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Mandous (pronounce Man-Dous) is 500 km east-southeast of Karaikal and roughly 580 km southeast of Chennai. Over the next two days, Chennai and other districts in Tamil Nadu are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall as a result of this system. Due to the expected heavy rain, the district administrations of Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, and Vellore have deemed today and tomorrow as school holidays.
Due to the expected heavy rain on Friday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued a red alert for three districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chengalpattu, Villupuram, and Kanchipuram, as well as Puducherry. Nine districts have received orange alerts: Tiruvallur, Chennai, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Tirupattur, Vellore, and Ranipet.
The district SPs and other officials have been told by Director General of Police (DGP) C Sylendra Babu to prepare precautionary measures before it starts to rain. Additionally, volunteers from the fishing community are given instructions to prepare rescue boats. In the state and Puducherry, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been stationed. Three teams are deployed in the Union Territory, with two in Puducherry and one in Karaikal, compared to six teams in the districts of Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Chennai.
