Microsoft has announced that Edge support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 will stop.

Microsoft has made known when Edge on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 will no longer receive security updates. It seems natural that Microsoft will stop supporting its browser when the end of support for those older operating systems arrives in January 2023. People who wish to browse the web will need to update to Windows 10 or Windows 11 as Google is also discontinuing support for Chrome on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.

Versions 109 of Microsoft Edge and 109 of WebView2 Runtime will be the final releases that support Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, respectively. Both of those are presently planned to launch on January 12, 2023, only two days after Windows 7 and Windows 8.1's end of service date.

In a recent blog post, Microsoft published the timeline:

"The WebView2 Runtime's Evergreen and Fixed versions are equally subject to this end of support timeline.Evergreen WebView2 Runtimes that were previously installed will update as usual to version 109 but won't keep doing so after that. Future installations of the Evergreen WebView2 Runtime for Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 will do so with version 109 once support has ended.

Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 will not be able to launch fixed versions of the WebView2 Runtime higher than version 109, hence those operating systems shouldn't be utilised.

People should upgrade their systems to Windows 10 or later in order to continue receiving support. The support for Windows 10 will continue until 2025, thus there is no immediate urgency to upgrade to Windows 11.
