Messi declares that the Qatar final will be his final World Cup match for Argentina, saying, "To finish this way is amazing."

After playing a key role in Argentina's semi-final victory over Croatia, Lionel Messi announced that the Qatar 2022 championship game will be his final World Cup match for the team.

  • Argentina defeated Croatia 3-0 to advance to the championship.
  • This is Messi's second World Cup championship game.
  • The captain states that he will not return in 2026.

WHAT OCCURED?

The 35-year-old started the scoring against Croatia from the penalty spot and gave Julian Alvarez an assist for one of his two goals as Argentina easily won 3-0. After coming in second place in the 2014 World Cup final, Messi can now anticipate playing in his second World Cup final. The superstar of Paris Saint-Germain has acknowledged that he will leave Argentina's national team after the championship that will at the very least be his final World Cup game.

WHAT THEY SAID: "I am really thrilled to play the last game in a final and to end my World Cup trip in a final. That makes me feel incredibly happy, Messi said to reporters following the game."Seeing how much Argentina has enjoyed the World Cup has made everything I have experienced during it emotional. Between one year and the next, there are numerous years. I doubt I'll be able to accomplish that. This is a fantastic way to end.

THE BIGGER PICTURE: Messi continued by saying that after 36 years of suffering, Argentina will do whatever it takes to win the highly-coveted title. We will use all of our effort, just as we have in the past, to ensure that this time we truly succeed. I have been enjoying my time with the national team for the past few years. Everything that is occurring to us is incredibly exciting to me. It is just amazing to win the Copa America, go to the World Cup with 36 straight victories, and then cap off that run in the championship game. I wish the Argentineans a good time and that they enjoy what we are doing. They shouldn't question our commitment to giving our all.
